.tales from the workshop pt. I

Da ich den unten stehenden Text schon vor ein paar Stunden auf Deutsch geschrieben habe, verlinke ich ihn einfach mal nur hier, denn er befindet sich auf meinem Schreibwerkstatt-Blog.
Und nein, meine Blogs über das Schreiben wandern nicht dahin ab, ich Cross-Poste sie nur ab und an, da ich nicht denke, dass alle Schreibwerkstatt Mitglieder überhaupt von meinem Blog hier wissen, einige aber Interesse an meinen Workshopgeschichten angemeldet haben.
Natürlich könnte ich es auch einfach kopieren, aber die schiere länge dieses Doppelposts würde wohl schon einige abschrecken ;)

So, my workshop about writing for comics has been going for some weeks now. My assignments up to now:
1. Watch a silent movie (“Sunrise”)
2. Write one paragraph summery of the story
3. Write two paragraphs summery of the story
4. Write short character descriptons of the main characters

You should think all this would be no problem but I am kinda Miss Planless… As some might remember I started NaNoWriMo without a plot last year and did not had one until a few thousand words were written.
I’m just no planner if it comes to story writing. I write and wait what happens. If I have some ideas about the plot or some characters I write it down but I really don’t plan much further.

Of course there is a vague idea about the story or the characters but most I get to know while writing. It just works like this for me ‘though I know it doesn’t for many, many other writers.

Because of this I have some trouble right now because it’s required to know what will happen during my comic/graphic novel and how it will end.
Sadly I have no clue…
But I have Serena who helps me a lot!

In the beginning I really had no idea how to start because I’ve never written for a visual medium. I have lots and lots of ideas but how should I know which one works for a comic?
Serena’s answer was pretty simple: Which idea starts a movie in your head? And most importandly: Which idea feels right? Which one do you *want* to use?

So I chose an idea I wanted to write for some time. I just know some points of the plot and I know the main character because she also has a small part in my novel-project “Noir”.

Another challenge is the language since I decided to ignore my mother tounge and write the whole project in English from the beginning.
As you can see I am far from being perfect. ‘though I almost understand everything I hear or read it is still a very different thing to express myself in the right way since my vocabulary is not as broad as the one of a native English speaker.
The biggest problem is inventing certain terms. A few hours ago I wanted to find a fitting term for a person who guards the gates of hell and one of my online dictionaries suggested “Hollander” :|
Does that mean the Neatherlands are hell? I quite liked Amsterdam so what does that say about me?

.an online class with the mother of gloom cookies

Alice Hoffman tut es. Holly Black tut es. Francesca Lia Block tut es. Natalie Goldberg tut es.
Was tun sie, fragt ihr? {Also, wahrscheinlich frag ihr euch das nicht, aber da das hier mein Blog ist, tue ich einfach mal so, als würdet ihr das fragen.}
Sie geben workshops. Diese Damen sind alle brilliante, erfolgreiche Schriftstellerinnen, zwei von ihnen sind auf meiner All-Time-Favorite-Liste.
Normalerweise würde ich lachen und einen Freudentanz aufführen, mich für ihre Kurse einschreiben und dann ein bisschen weiter tanzen, wenn es nicht ein kleines Problem gäbe: Sie befinden sich alle auf einem anderen Kontinent.
Und Klischee-Studentin, die ich nunmal bin, fehlt mir das Geld für einen Spontanen-Landwechsel. Also bin ich gnatschig und traurig weil ich eine großartige Chance verpasse, mit einigen meiner Schreib-Idole zusammen zu arbeiten.
Vor ein paar Wochen- als ich gerade gnatschig war, weil ich schon wieder einen Kurs gefunden hatte, an dem ich nicht teilnehmen konnte- entdeckte ich, dass auch Serena Valentino Kurse gibt. Serena Valentino! Gloom Cookie Serena Valentino, die ich auf meine Berührende Bücher Liste gesetzt habe!

Es wird sogar noch besser, denn sie gibt einen Kurs zum Thema Comic schreiben, den ich schon ewig gesucht habe. Die Idee bzw. der Wunsch für Comics zu schreiben, wurde zum ersten Mal durch Sandman in mir wach (ignoriert dieses schwache Wortspiel bitte) und durch Gloom Cookie später umso mehr verstärkt. So sehr, dass ich nach dem Lesen nach Kursen gesucht habe, die das Thema „Schreiben für Comics“ beinhalten oder zumindest irgendwelchen Informationen, wie man überhaupt erste Schritte in diese Richtung machen kann. Meine Suche war mehr als nur erfolglos.

Und dann las ich von Serenas Kurs auf ihrem Blog. Als ich die Worte „San Jose“ las, bereitete ich mich innerlich schon auf einen weiteren Knacks in meinem Schreiberherz vor, aber davor bewahrten mich dann zwei weitere Worte: Online Class.

Ihr könnt euch denken, wie es weiter ging.

Ein paar Mails mit Serena, um zu klären ob es für mich als nicht-Englischen Mutersprachler überhaupt Sinn machen würde ihren Workshop zu belegen und dann war ich auch schon eingeschrieben.

Wie oft bekommt man schon die Chance mit der Person zu arbeiten, die einen überhaupt erst inspiriert etwas zu tun? Auch wenn es nicht leicht werden wird, freue ich mich auf die Herausforderung und bin sehr gespannt auf diesen Kurs.

So, nun wisst ihr, was derzeit (unter anderem) in meinem Kopf herum schwirrt.

What do they do you ask? {Well, I guess you don't but since this is my blog I pretend you do ask}
They give workshops. Those ladies are brilliant writers, two of them are even on my list of All-time-favorite-writers.
Normally I would laugh and dance in joy and sign up for their classes and dance some more if there was not one tiny little problem.
The workshops are all on another continent. Being a clichee student I don't have the money to go to the US for classes and keep being stuck in Germany. Grumpy and sad because I would love to work with those brilliant ladies.
So some weeks ago I- already being grumpy because of all the classes I would miss- I found out that Serena Valentino gives classes to. Serena Valentino! Gloom Cookie Serena Valentino which I put on my list of touching books some time ago.
It gets even better, she's giving a class about writing for comics which I have been interested more and more. First the idea of writing for comics crossed my mind while reading Sandman and later again when I read Gloom Cookie. I even searched the web for classes or any information about writing for a comic. I found almost nothing.
And then Serena wrote about her class on her blog. When I read the words "San Jose" I prepared my heart for breaking a bit again but then my eyes found two other words which safed my heart: Online class.

You might imagine what happened next...
A few mails with Serena followed because I was not sure if it was even possible that I could even attend the online class. As you know English is not my mother tounge and writing in another language is a whole new challenge.

But after I got an ok from Serena I thought "To hell with it, at least try it" and signed up. You never know how many chances you'll get to work with a person whose work you really admire. And working with Serena Valentino on my own comic (idea) after she was the one whose work made me want to go into comics in the first place is just an opportunity too good to let it pass.

So that's what's in my mind mostly right now.
